Stacked MCA Positions: Why Multiple Advances Create a Dangerous Cycle

Taking multiple merchant cash advances from different funders at the same time is called stacking. It can feel like a lifeline, but it often becomes a trap.

What Is MCA Stacking?

MCA stacking occurs when a business takes out multiple merchant cash advances from different funders — either simultaneously or in rapid succession. Each advance comes with its own factor rate and daily or weekly repayment schedule, meaning multiple funders are pulling from the same revenue stream at once.

How Businesses End Up Stacked

The pattern is common and understandable:

  1. A business takes an MCA to cover a cash flow gap
  2. The repayments strain daily cash flow
  3. The business takes a second advance to cover both the first repayment and operations
  4. The same cycle repeats with a third, fourth, or fifth funder

Each new advance provides temporary relief but increases the total daily withdrawal from the business account. Eventually, the combined daily pulls exceed what the business generates — and the system collapses.

The Specific Risks of Stacking

Accelerating Cash Drain

Multiple funders drawing simultaneously can take a significant percentage of daily deposits before the business owner has a chance to use the funds for operations.

Cross-Default Provisions

Some MCA agreements include provisions that make defaulting on one agreement a default on all. This can trigger a cascade of legal actions from multiple funders at once.

Negotiation Complexity

Settling with one funder while others are still active can disrupt relationships with the remaining funders. A coordinated approach across all positions is almost always necessary.

What to Do If You Are Already Stacked

If you are already in a stacked MCA situation:

  • Do not attempt to negotiate with funders one at a time without a coordinated plan
  • Understand all of your agreements before taking any action
  • Act before lawsuits are filed — the window for negotiation narrows significantly once litigation begins

We have worked with business owners managing multiple simultaneous MCA positions. The complexity is real, but it is manageable with a structured approach.

A Word on New Advances

If you are struggling with existing MCA payments and are considering taking another advance to cover them — stop and talk to someone first. The math rarely works, and it often makes the eventual resolution more expensive and difficult.
